Q: What do Forensic Psychologists Do?
Our Forensic Psychologists apply psychological theory and skills to the understanding and functioning of the legal and criminal justice system. They work in criminal, civil and family legal contexts and provide services for perpetrators, victims and justice personnel. Forensic Psychology encompasses issues such as: the causes, prevention and treatment of criminal behaviour; the Courts and the correctional system; and the contributions of psychological evidence to legal proceedings. Undertaking psychological assessments and writing of Medico-Legal reports is a process that requires experience and skill. Our Specialist Forensic Psychologist has a broad forensic & clinical background, excellent assessment skills, superior communication skills and extensive experience in completing psychological evaluations in legal settings. They are trained in writing reports for forensic and legal purposes, and are regularly involved in the delivery of forensic psychological services to legal firms, Courts, Government Departments and Tribunals. Forensic Psychologists can provide testimony as expert witnesses in cases as diverse as assessment for trauma of victims-of-crime to the assessment of risk of re-offending. The diversity includes issues such as competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, assessing risk and dangerousness, post-accident impairment, capacity to work, degree of mental retardation, the insanity defence, operation of memory, causation of death as a result of mental state, custodial & access arrangements and effects of discrimination.
Our forensic psychologist can help with proceedings for Tribunals as she was a permanent Member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) e.g. writing of reports, capacity assessments, child protection assessments, BlueCard application psychological reports, etc

Q: Do I need a referral ?
No referral is necessary … anyone can call us directly to arrange an appointment. If you are visiting for counselling, your doctor, and other health professional or WorkCover may suggest and/or refer you but it is not necessary as self-referral is very common.

Q: Are there any rebates available for counselling?
For Medicare, if your GP has completed a Mental Health Care Plan for you and we have received the appropriate referral details from your GP then all you need to do is pay the session fee upfront and then take your receipt to a Medicare office to receive your rebate.

Q: How much does it cost?
ABetter_Life Resource is a private organisation that is not funded by the Government.
A scale of fees applies for training, medico legal reports, legal issues, supervision, clinical practice development, coaching, mediations, and human resource management.
A separate scale of fees applies for counselling. Private Health insurances may provide rebates for Psychological Counselling Services and we encourage you to contact them for further information. Alternatively if you want counselling, a referral from your General Practitioner, Private Psychiatrist, or private Paediatrician, may qualify you for a rebate under Medicare. You may also be able to claim Psychologists’ fees through your workplace, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or State accident/compensation scheme. Fees vary per session (45 – 50 minutes) to see our Psychologist and Counsellors depending on the issue being addressed.
If you require professional services (e.g. for supervision, for counselling, for case conferencing, undertake any readings / editing of reports, etc) these are also billed at a set fee.
Payment is due on the day the session has taken place. Payment for training, medico-legal reports, and legal issues is due a set time prior to the training date taking place.

Q: What happens from here?
If you call ABetter_Life Resource and it is directed to the message service, you will receive a return call from our Intake Officer. They will explain how our intake process works, and gather enough information to decide which of our professionals is most appropriate for you to see. Usually we are able to schedule your first appointment during that call, but sometimes we may need to call you back with appointment details.
If required we will then send you our welcome pack, and an appointment confirmation letter, however should this not be necessary to send, you will need to read the welcome pack at your first appointment and sign confirmation that you have read this. It is very important that you read this information, as it contains our Terms of Service and a lot of other important information such as no-show/late cancellation policy.
Finally, we will ask you to arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first appointment, and bring reading glasses if you need them to read documents. During that time we will ask you to fill in our client registration and consent paperwork. After that is all done when you first come to our service, we will be ready to see you for your first session, and to do what we can to help you address the issues you want to see us about.
Thanks again, and remember to listen out for the call from our intake officer.
We'll speak with you soon,
